CONSCRIPTION COMES TO COVENTRY

In May a revised Military Service Act decreed that all men aged between 18 and 41 could be conscripted to the forces. Under the draconian provisions of the act, men who had previously been exempted as unfit were to have their assessments reconsidered. Time expired veterans were also to be called up.

‘Miss Leo Bonn brought over five soldiers, four with only one leg and one with both legs off who moved about on his knees; he was to have artificial legs later. Like all the others he was most cheerful – told us in fits of laughter how, when having a pillow fight with his chums, he forgot that he had no feet – tried to jump on the ground and fell over. ‘It was fun,’ he said, with a beaming smile.’
